Barrel aged beers and ugly sweaters this Saturday at Zaftig

This coming Saturday, December 6, the crew at Zaftig Brewing are throwing a holiday party. The theme is an ugly sweater party, because what pairs with high abv beers better than a wool sweater depicting baby Jesus riding a reindeer who is kicking a soccer ball past a diving Santa Claus?  Possibly a gyro, because the Pitabilities Food Truck will be there serving up sliced meat wrapped in unleavened bread.

As much we all enjoy wearing ugly clothes and chowing down on tasty pitas, the main attraction is the release of three new beers.  They will be pouring their Christmas Ale, which is a spiced porter; a bourbon barrel aged version of their excellent Wee Heavy; and a new beer called ZBS, which is short for Zaftig Bourbon Stout.  The latter beer is aged in Watershed Bourbon barrels and the guys at Zaftig simply described it this way in the message they sent me “It is by far the best beer we have made!”

I don’t know how many of you attended the Too Cans Wood Aging Extravaganza back in September, but those beers were decadent and delicious (click here if you missed my review of that event).  These big malty, barrel aged beers are the kind of beers Zaftig was born to brew.  You can even take home a growler to get through the cold, dark nights ahead of us.

The party runs from 11 am to 6 pm at their Worthington location (545 Shrock Road, Worthington, OH 43229).  Attendees wearing an ugly sweater will receive $3 off, but I have no inside information on what qualifies as ugly.  I think it is safe to assume that anyone wearing a sweater emblazoned with the likeness of a dead badger is a shoe-in for the discount.  I hope to see you there.
