All Things Beer Episode 42 – British Bitters and Ghost Stories

Bitters, whether they be ordinary, best, strong, or extra special – are a staple of the British pub, but not one of the easiest styles to find here in the USA. Fortunately here in Ohio there are a few breweries brewing them with pride in the English tradition. In this episode we turn a spotlight on this unassuming category of beers. We start with one of the few imported British Bitters widely available in the USA, Fuller’s London Pride, before heading up to Mansfield Ohio, where we talk with Carmone and Duncan MacFarlane at The Phoenix Brewing Company to learn what goes into making a great ESB.

Given the Halloween timing of this release, it’s fitting to visit a brewery housed in a former mortuary. After discussing pub ales our conversation with Carmone and Duncan turned to stories of the paranormal in what might be called one of Ohio’s most haunted breweries. Their resident ghost Charlie makes his presence known! Hopefully it is not too distracting a listen due to the clawing, shuffling noises, and bumps in the night that we picked up while recording.
