All Things Beer Episode 43 – Dark Milds

Dark milds are far from flashy. After all how can you get excited about a beer style with such a pedestrian name? Yet, when done properly this dark, malty, pub ale packs a surprising amount of flavor into a low abv package. Dark milds are not only unassuming, they are elusive. Good luck trying to find a mild ale – imported or domestic – in the beer aisle of your local shop. Fortunately, Columbus drinkers are lucky to have a variety of choices, including one of the best dark milds in the country, the two-time GABF medalist, Toasty. To shine a light on this often overlooked style, we are joined in the studio by head brewer Ryan Torres from Brew Brothers to enjoy and discuss his award winning dark mild. After wrapping up our conversation with Ryan, we continue our explorations of milds at Columbus’ newest brewery, Thunderwing Brewing. Owner/brewer Jason Wing shares a pint of his dark mild, Far Shores, and previews the diverse line-up of beer styles on offer at his west side brewery.

  1. Good episode. I’ve had Toasty a couple times: definitely a good beer. May have to head to the West side soon to try their Dark Mikd.

  2. Hey Pat, thanks for providing this valuable information about beer style that does not get enough love. Here are a couple additional Dark Mild recipes that are worth a brew:

  3. You’ve made me fancy a dark mild! They’ve gone out of fashion in the UK so I might struggle to find one in a pub. Back in the 70s and 80s Tetley’s mild always seemed head and shoulders above the rest. I hope it’s still being brewed now the brewery has left Leeds.

    1. From what I’ve read the fortunes of mild ale in the UK definitely suffered in the latter part of the 20th century. They are not exactly setting the world on fire now, but the situation seems to have stabilized. Let us know if you find a good one!
